Carolann Solebello: words & music

Michael

(Carolann Solebello)
picked up the mail today and i'm not sure how to feel
neat red letters in a stranger's hand, university seal
twenty years have made you into who you planned to be
i haven't thought of you in years - how can you think of me?

i must admit i nearly tossed the damn thing in the trash
a long-hand letter to a long-lost love is slightly out of fashion
but now a wave of things forgotten washes over me
and i am clinging to an oar in a sea of memory

michael i am sorry for the things i left unsaid
the letters left unwritten and those i left unread
but why'd you cast your message in a bottle out to sea?
did you believe your tender words could touch the lamb in me?

michael you would not believe the person i've become
the lioness you tried to tame has aged and mellowed some
she no longer thunders in her chariot of rage
content with pens and paper and some time upon the stage

michael i am sorry for the things i left unsaid
for promises left broken and those i kept instead
though my heart cries out to touch the hand that held the pen
no matter what the poets say, we can't go home again

picked up the mail today and found a long-lost friend
i can't believe you took the time to crash my world again
but why'd you have to make me doubt the choice i made that day?
so history repeats itself and i throw it all away
