Not just because my calendar tells me so, or because I have spotted crocuses and daffodils in bloom, but because I no longer feel like the day is over at 4:30PM, which is the time I'm writing this missive. Say what you will about Daylight Saving Time, but I am selfishly in favor of it. I secretly call it Sanity Saving Time. More light longer into the evening makes me feel more alive and optimistic, no matter what the temperature. It's probably a good thing I wasn't born in Scandinavia.

I had a few adventures in March, starting with a quick trip to DC with BEV GRANT to present Bev's multimedia women's labor history project WE WERE THERE in concert with the sparkling DC Labor Chorus. It's always a joy to present this show with Bev and meet so many outstanding women labor organizers, educators, and union sisters. If you're a labor organizer or educator and would like to learn more about WE WERE THERE, contact me or Bev and we'll have a conversation.

March also brought me a few opportunities to get in front of the camera again. I got to play a not-so-loveable mother of adult children in a short film and work background on a feature film and a TV series. If you're watching Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and have a very, very sharp eye, you might spot me in two episodes – one at swanky masquerade ball, and another at a funeral. Both had me in absolutely EPIC hairdos…

Grateful for these and looking forward to more adventures in April – shows in Asbury Park NJ, Gloversville NY, Bellows Falls VT, and Bethlehem PA – alongside a few wonderful musical friends. See below for show details…

If your town is not on my list of adventures, well, why not? I play house concerts, too, and it's not so hard to host one if you enjoy the music and have a handful of friends you'd like to share it with. Drop me a note and I'll be happy to chat about it.

As always, I'm grateful to you for sticking with me and reading this far. I came into the world in February, and though my birthday is dangerously close to that famous martyr's feast day, sharing my personal spotlight with Saint Valentine never bothered me one bit. Perhaps the heart-shaped birthday cakes my mom used to make for me helped, but I've always found plenty to love about February – chocolate, snow, gradually later sunset times, a convenient excuse to tell people how much I love them, and of course, an abundance of RED, which has always been my favorite color.

This February, I've got a handful of shows to add to that list of things I love. This weekend, I'll be happily reuniting with my NO FUSS AND FEATHERS bandmates for two shows in the sunny South – Atlanta GA and Bluffton SC – then sharing the bill closer to home in Belmar NJ with wonderful young songwriter named LEAH THOMPSON. All the details are below, and I hope you'll stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

And if you're not, well, why not invite me to YOUR neighborhood? I play house concerts, too, and it's not so hard to host one if you enjoy the music and have a handful of friends you'd like to share it with. Drop me a note and I'll be happy to chat about it.

Anyway, many thanks for sticking with me and reading this far. That seems to happen every year, and every year, that flash seems even flashier. And every January, I tell myself the same story – no matter how I have spent my time, no matter what I have accomplished, it never seems to be enough. And that's just not not true. Sound familiar?

So, despite the fact that backward glances depress me (and forward gazes frighten me), I decided to do a little accounting of what I actually did during the past twelve months.

For starters, there was acting work – principal roles in two short films, plus background work on five episodes of four different TV series (all yet to be released).

And there were, of course, thirtysomething live performance gigs – most of them solo, some with the Bev Grant Band, and some with No Fuss and Feathers. I'd like there to be more of those this year, of course, but I digress…

I also started hosting a new open mic in Manhattan and am in discussions to host another (stay tuned).

And there was one music conference, two labor conferences, one very long solo road trip to Kansas and back, and – wait for it – two hundred sixtysomething in-studio yoga classe. Apparently, I have a boatload of karmic fish to fry.

And finally, in the waning weeks of the year, I heard the call of civic responsibility and submitted myself as a candidate for the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Board of Directors, an organization I have been part of since the turn of the century. I am proud to be running on a “ticket” that includes my friends Cheryl Prashker and Pam Robinson, both of whom have deep ties and vast experience in the NERFA community – Cheryl as former Board President and Assistant Conference Coordinator and Pam as former Conference Volunteer Coordinator. I myself attended NERFA as a performer for twenty years, and spent six of those as Keeper of the Wild Guerrillas (aka Private Showcase Coordinator).

So, if you are a voting member of Folk Alliance International (check your status at Folk.org) in the Northeast region, you should have received an email from NERFA today, Thursday, January 4th, telling you to expect a ballot in your inbox on Monday, January 8th. If you're a voting member, I'd sure appreciate your support. If you're not and would like to be, you can sign up or renew your membership at Folk.org before January 8th to receive a ballot.

Additionally, the ballot will also include a proposal to remove NERFA's current President, Justin Nordell, from the Board of Directors. For the record, I wholeheartedly support that proposal. It is time for new leadership at NERFA.

If you've read this far, I thank you. Maybe I'll see you at a show soon. See below for a few upcoming appearances, and, as always, check the SHOWS page on my website for updates.

Until we meet again, I wish you abundant love, beauty, and

Peace,
Carolann

Show details:

Friday, January 19th at 7:30PM
CAROLANN SOLEBELLO at Mad River Coffeehouse
18 Six Flags Road, Campton NH
TICKETS AND INFO

Saturday, January 20th at 7:30PM
CAROLANN SOLEBELLO at The Open Book Coffeehouse
Canton Public Library
786 Washington Street, Canton MA
TICKETS AND INFO

Friday, February 2nd at 7:30PM
NO FUSS AND FEATHERS at Savannah Folk Music Society
First Presbyterian Church Social Hall
520 Washington Avenue, Savannah GA
TICKETS AND INFO

Saturday, February 3rd at 7PM
NO FUSS AND FEATHERS at Music on Malphrus
110 Malphrus Road, Bluffton SC
TICKETS AND INFO

Friday, February 16th at 8PM
CAROLANN SOLEBELLO at Belmar Arts Center
Split bill with Leah Thompson
608 River Road, Belmar NJ
TICKETS AND INFO

Also find me here:

FACEBOOK
INSTAGRAM
YOUTUBE
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/72546942023-08-09T16:10:46-04:002023-10-16T10:50:52-04:00Hot NEW Shows in August!
Hi Friends!

Hope August is treating you well… Just a quick note to let you know we've added TWO SHOWS to the Summer 2023 schedule – CS in-the-round in Manhattan on August 15th, plus NO FUSS AND FEATHERS in Brooklyn on August 19th!

NYC, NEW JERSEY, and PHILADELPHIA, I'm looking at YOU! So much so that on a mid-month OUTDOOR background acting job for a TV episode set on a hot Summer day, we actors did not need to act very much at all. It's a wild world these days, I suppose. I try to enjoy the moment and forget the larger implications of all that wildness, but I digress…

As for music-making, I am deeply grateful to have had two exquisite solo concert experiences this past month at Dorn Space and Café Veritas in upstate New York. On the coldest weekend in recent memory, I was pleasantly surprised at how many intrepid folks came out to hear live music at these wonderful venues still standing strong after the tribulation of recent years. I love what I do and remain humbled and grateful when people come out to listen live and in person!

I'm currently working on adding more LIVE shows like that to my calendar, but until I schedule one in your town, I humbly offer this: On December 9, 2022, I performed an online concert to benefit the Connor Sheehan Fund, established by my lifelong friend Barbara and her husband Dan in memory of their beautiful son, who we lost to mental illness and substance abuse in 2020. I can still say that, right? It's still January, and I'm still constantly writing (or typing) the wrong year... In any case, if you're reading this, I wish you only good things in 2023 -- light, health, love, and a deeper appreciation of all that is beautiful.

Honestly, that's pretty much what I'm wishing for myself this year. As I concern myself with the daily business of living, I seek to stay focused on each task or feeling or interaction -- sending an email, having a conversation, cooking a meal, practicing yoga, performing a song -- with intention and presence.

And I've recently said YES to something new and scary, yet deeply familiar to me. Long ago, before I embraced the life of a performing songwriter, I performed on stages across the country as an actor. In recent months, I've returned to the craft, but on film this time. Since September, I've said YES to background acting work on three different TV series and a lead role in a student film. It's been great fun so far and has proven to be a really excellent way to do something I love and make a little money right here in NYC when I'm not on tour. Watch this space for details on when those episodes will air...

And speaking of touring -- I've got a little of that coming up soon -- both solo and with NO FUSS AND FEATHERS -- and hope to be adding more shows both near and far very soon! Check it out...

How is it I sometimes feel I'm standing still?

Perhaps a course in astrophysics or metaphysics or just some vigorous physical activity will help me explain the elastic nature of time and memory or at least get my cranial neurons firing again...

In any case, I'm happy to report that I've actually started recording sessions for a new album at The Wind-UP Shop! Well, one recording session... but still, that's more than zero! So happy to be working with my super-skilled and super-patient friend Jay Mafale on this project as each song unfolds in the studio. More to come on that front...

And I've got just a handful of live shows -- both solo and with NO FUSS AND FEATHERS -- and a couple of virtual appearances between now and the end of the year, but they are GOOOOD ones! Check it out...

Peace,
Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/70459722022-08-25T15:49:28-04:002022-08-25T16:04:52-04:00Suddenly September
And just like that, Summer is nearly over...

Every year, without fail, I marvel at how quickly it slips away. How almost imperceptibly the barest hint of chill slips into the early mornings and late evenings even as the days remain long and steamy. How easily the list of things I was *planning* to do grows longer and the list of things I've actually *accomplished* remains shorter than I'd like it to be. How projects I put on the back burner because "I have plenty of time" are now heating up fast and giving me the feeling that I'm not at all prepared for what's coming next...

But are we ever really prepared for what's coming next?

I have been a procrastinator for as long as I can remember. In adulthood, I've come to recognize that behavior as a manifestation of the anxiety that has also followed me around forever. Still, that knowledge does not necessarily bring wisdom. The same anxiety that causes me to feel chronically unprepared also causes me to obsess over details and over-prepare, usually at the last minute. Yes, it's a pattern, a rut, a cycle the Buddhists call samsara, and it causes needless suffering. And I know that.

But knowledge does not necessarily bring wisdom. That comes with practice; teaching the body and mind new patters of thought and action. So I breathe. And I practice doing the next right thing instead of obsessing over the whole teetering pile, and I feel a bit less overwhelmed.

And then I book shows and I put them on my calendar, which I absolutely LOVE to do. I have no booking agent, so every new concert represents a conversation -- sometimes a long one -- a connection between me and a presenter, and the deeply satisfying feeling of knowing, in part, what's coming next.

So, what *is* coming next?

Recording, for one thing. In just a few weeks, I'll start working on a new album with Jay Mafale at his studio, The Wind-Up Shop. In addition to being the lead guitarist and utility player in our band NO FUSS AND FEATHERS, Jay is also an accomplished recording engineer and audio mixologist. I'll still be wearing the producer's hat, as I promised myself back in pre-pandemic 2020, and I'm still planning to keep things pretty close to the vest, centering voice and guitar, allowing the songs to speak for themselves and BREATHE...

More on that soon, including ways to get in on the action with a pre-order.

But in the even MORE immediate future, there is a SHOW!

This Saturday evening, August 27th, I'll be playing songs at my favorite Bronx café, The Artist, on City Island alongside the luminous JULIE CORBALIS.
Until we meet again, here's to good health, good fun, great music, and

Peace,
Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/70087982022-07-06T15:09:04-04:002022-07-06T15:09:04-04:00Connections
On Independence Day, I thought about interdependence instead. Because that's just the kind of weirdo I am.

I thought about a document so breathtakingly radical it sparked not only a revolution and a new nation, but a whole new way of thinking. In declaring independence from a distant and tyrannical monarch, our nation's founders also declared independence from old and outdated ways of thinking about government and society.

I thought about how radical the phrase "all men are created equal" must have seemed in 1776. Even when we allow for the fact that ALL, in the minds of the founders, included only white male landowners, it was still a big and revolutionary idea. No more divinely-anointed monarchs. No more class distinctions. All of us equal as created.

Radical.

The words of the Declaration still ring deep and powerful today. Independence. Unalienable rights. Self-governance. Freedom from tyranny. Freedom to pursue happiness. Individually, but also collectively -- as a people united not by soil or culture, but by a philosophy so radical it shook the world -- we strive toward the idea of true freedom.

So yes, on Independence Day, I thought about interdependence.

About how, in pursing our individualistic American-ness, it's easy to forget how much we need each other. How even in its vastness, how small our world can seem in this age of instant information. How easily the problems and concerns of our neighbors, be they around the corner or around the world, become our concerns. About how deeply we rely on each other.

And about how tender and fragile we really are. And how fearful, angry, and resentful we become, especially when left to our own devices. How desperately we cling to destructive emotions like buoys when we feel ourselves alone and adrift.

Because not one of us is truly alone. Not one of us is truly independent. Nor should we be.

The great Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh said, "We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness." I think about that a lot lately, especially when it comes to songwriting and performance.

I long to connect, so I find myself newly excited about getting out into the world to play songs for three-dimensional people. It's what I know how to do, so I'm making plans for recording and travel so I can keep on connecting with other humans through the medium of words and music.

This Sunday evening, I'll be playing songs at Jalopy Theatre in my hometown of Brooklyn, alongside Rod MacDonald, a songwriter whose words and music have most certainly impacted my life from the moment I first heard them.
Regional folk music conferences like SERFA are essentially a gathering of the tribe, where songwriters, musicians, radio hosts, concert presenters, festival organizers, record promoters, producers, engineers, publicists, and others who share a passion for folk and acoustic music come together to share songs, stories, experiences, advice, and anything generally related to bringing the music we love into the wider world.

The experience was, in short, amazing. I hadn't seen most of these folks in three dimensions in at least three years, so the power of human connection was palpable and powerful. I came away from those few days in the mountains with a renewed sense of hope for the future and faith in the human spirit.

There is more that unites us than divides us, friends. Of that I am certain. So, in spite of the daily onslaught that is the news of the world, I press onward feeling just the tiniest bit warmer, safe in the arms of kindred...

A chilly, dark, frightening minute that might actually have been a year, a decade, a century. It's really hard to say. I don't know about you, but time moves just a little differently for me these days. So much so that I almost didn't notice the days are getting longer and the tourists are coming back to NYC and my kid is about to turn sixteen and I finally -- FINALLY -- have some good news to share with you...

NO FUSS AND FEATHERS, the fearsome foursome of KARYN OLIVER, CATHERINE MILES, JAY MAFALE, and Yours Truly, will be getting the band back together for THREE shows in March, bringing enough pent-up harmony and hilarity to light up the entire Eastern Seaboard. We're BEYOND excited to make music together again, so this run of shows is bound to be a whiz-banger!

Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/67405122021-09-08T18:36:50-04:002021-09-08T18:36:50-04:00Sweater Weather
...well, not quite, but I'm excited. I'm one of those people who deeply enjoys the crisping of the air and the falling of the leaves and the making of the soup and the sharpening of the pencils that comes with the arrival of Autumn. You can keep your pumpkin spice, but I'll meet you for a steaming black coffee and a pumpernickel bagel on a park bench any day of the week come September. And yes, Autumn in New York IS all it's cracked up to be. Most of the time...

Anyhow, Summer was lovely in that I got to do a few live-and-in-person gigs and remember how to do that thing I love to do so much. How very wonderful to STAND before LIVE audiences on porches and verandahs and SING for (and with) other humans!

Grateful I'll get to do that again a few times this month, because truthfully, I'm not sure when it will happen again:

Things are heating up in more than one way, it seems.
Hope this finds you well in all ways as Spring gently unfolds her blossoms and we, it seems, do the same; carefully emerging from the longest, deepest, darkest hibernation of body, mind, and spirit in living memory.

As we emerge, I find myself marveling at what a remarkably adaptable and resilient species we are. Really. Each one of us developed new habits, new routines, and new patterns of thought and behavior as we adjusted to ever-shifting realities, carrying uncomfortable and often painful burdens of uncertainty, fear, and grief. And here we are, adapting once again, not simply reverting back to what used to be, but perhaps finding better, more meaningful, and kinder ways forward. Remarkable, indeed.

Though I suppose a victory lap would be inappropriate, I do think we can at least take a collective breath and celebrate this moment after all we've lived through. Live and learn, as my Grandma Alice used to say... I know I certainly learned a LOT this year. Some of it was beautiful and noble, but a whole lot more of it was messy and uncomfortable. But in that muddy, murky bog, there's one truth that's floated to the top of my consciousness this Spring: Uncertainty is the only certainty. I have been a dreamer, a planner, a worrier -- and often an anxious mess -- pretty much all my life. I'm learning that while planning is often necessary, plans are fragile and sometimes fall apart. And that's okay. Nothing whatsoever is certain. And that's okay, too. I'm trying to see this as further incentive to ground myself in the present, because really, that's all there is. Right here, right now...

And right now, I've got a few things to share with you. The biggest of those is that LIVE SHOWS are coming back! I've got not one, but TWO live-and-in-person shows here in Brooklyn, plus one virtual festival, on the calendar:

Friday, May 28th at Acme Hall Studios -- LIVE indoors, limited tickets, vaccination required -- Buy tickets HERE

Sunday, June 20th at Make Music New York -- LIVE outdoors, exact address to be announced

Friday, June 11th-Sunday, June 13th at Central PA Theatre & Dance Festival -- VIRTUAL

Another thing I'd like to share with you is one of the not-so-nice things I learned this year... Alongside many of my fellow music-makers, I have realized that Facebook has become a terribly inhospitable place for creative artists. Even though more than 1200 people follow my page there, Facebook's algorithm only allows a handful of those folks to actually see those posts. If you're one of those Facebook followers, I want you to know I sincerely appreciate you and apologize if you've not been seeing what I've been posting. It frustrates me that I cannot communicate the way I'd like to on what used to be a very handy platform.

So, instead of dropping a ton of money in Facebook's pocket to increase my visibility, I've begun shifting my focus to Instagram and YouTube as I contemplate my virtual future. I've been posting the songs I write each week for the RealWomenRealSongs project on both platforms, so follow and subscribe to my channels there for a steady stream of new music and a few bonus pics of my cat. It doesn't cost any of us a dime and it can help us stay in closer touch.

A few highlight links from my YouTube channel:

Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/65123212021-01-02T17:52:22-05:002021-01-02T17:52:22-05:00The Audacity of Hopelessness?
"Begin with hopelessness."

What?!?

This sentence knocked me flat when I first read <a contents="Pema Chodron's "When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times"" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="https://www.shambhala.com/when-things-fall-apart-3628.html" target="_blank">Pema Chodron's "When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times" a few months ago. Here I was, agitated and uneasy, seeking comfort in a well-known text by a popular Buddhist teacher, suddenly blindsided by the opposite of what I expected to find in its pages. In a sea of positive affirmations and exhortations to "keep hope alive" as tidal waves of hardship and suffering and grief pound us day in and day out, Chodron has the audacity to say that, actually, hopelessness is the answer? Really?

But then I read more:

"Hope and fear come from feeling that we lack something; they come from a sense of poverty. We can't simply relax with ourselves. We hold on to hope, and hope robs us of the present moment. We feel that someone else knows what's going on, but that there's something missing in us, and therefore something is lacking in our world."

Damn straight something is lacking. Lots of things are lacking right now. Like jobs and money and security and friends and, well, you know... Or is it? Do I need to hope for more than I already have, right here, right now? I pondered this. In hoping for better times, better days, brighter prospects, am I really creating anxiety in myself by shifting my focus away from the present and placing it in some unknown future?

The author continues:

"If hope and fear are two sides of one coin, so are hopelessness and confidence. If we're willing to give up hope that insecurity and pain can be exterminated, then we can have the courage to relax with the groundlessness of our situation."

Certainly, our situation -- well, mine, specifically, since that's what I know -- seems groundless right now. Things are insecure. Things are painful. Things are uncertain. Things are frightening. Is it really more courageous, more confident, more relaxing to just give in and allow things to be as they are without hoping for change? Maybe. Maybe we spend so much energy hoping for the future because the present is uncomfortable and not to our liking. But hoping cannot change anything at all, really, even in the best of times.

The more I thought about this concept of hopelessness, the more it made sense to me. The present is all we have, really. It's all we ever have.

So now, I strive toward hopelessness. Not in the way I used to think about that word, but in a Pema Chodron sort of way. I hope for nothing. I do what I do to make the best of each day, each hour, each moment, and am grateful for all that comes my way. I notice small things. I am quieter. I am less anxious. I am sleeping better. And I am a little more present to myself every day.

Now, if you've read this far, I suppose you deserve to know what any of this has to do with music, which is why you're here, right? Well, I'm grateful for a few things that have come my way this week...

FIRST, on New Year's Eve, I found out my song "Lady in Waiting," released on the Chicks With Dip "Stomping on Eggshells" compilation, was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Songwriters Association of Washington's Mid-Atlantic Song Contest in the Folk/Acoustic category. You can pick up a digital copy of the track or the full album on the Chicks With Dip page at Bandcamp. All proceeds from the sale of "Stomping on Eggshells" benefit the ACLU.

SECOND, on New Year's Day, I discovered an unexpected and beautiful gift from our friends at Stage 33 Live in Bellows Falls, VT. Back in March 2019, Joe Iadanza and I gave a concert there, which was recorded before a live audience on multiple cameras and a few fancy microphones, then subsequently and tastefully edited by Stage 33 Live's terrific tech team. Since I can't offer you a live concert right now -- and boy, I wish I could -- click HERE to access the newly-posted YouTube playlist of all the songs Joe and I performed in our first set that night. I love these videos, and they are truly is the next best thing to being there.

THIRD, on Monday, January 4th, the third season of RealWomenRealSongs launches, and I'm pleased to once again be part of an amazing team of women who will be bringing you new and unvarnished songs EVERY SINGLE DAY for a whole year. My day is Saturday, so you can catch my first offering on Saturday, January 9th, then every single Saturday through the end of 2021. When I participated in the first season of Cary Cooper's remarkable project in 2012-2013, it was a positively exhilarating creative experience, and I'm hoping for the same this time around. Follow us on our yearlong journey via Facebook or YouTube.

FINALLY, though I've still not grown accustomed to actually scheduling online concerts -- too much pressure -- I do actually hop online every now and then to play an impromptu set of songs for whoever happens to be listening. Though I can't predict when these spontaneous concerts will occur, they're always fun and relaxed. If you haven't already, follow me on my Facebook page to be the first to know about happenings of that sort.

NOW, if you've read THIS far, I congratulate you, and more than that, I THANK you. I am grateful for YOU; for your support, for your listening ears, for your mind, your heart, your life, and your health and strength. I wish you a beautiful present, day after day, and the relaxation that comes with courageous hopelessness.

Namaste,
Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/64064402020-08-10T13:46:33-04:002020-08-10T15:18:25-04:00intense weirdness and overwhelming goodness
Hello, friends!

It's been a minute... I'm hoping you and yours are safe and well, and that you're continuing to enjoy live music -- onscreen or outdoors at a safe distance -- whenever and wherever you can!

As for me, well, I've been pretty quiet these past few months, holding my little family and our local community close. So when our community rose up against racial injustice in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, I proudly marched in the streets of Brooklyn alongside my neighbors. There was righteous anger and deep sadness in the air, certainly, but also an exhilarating, overwhelming, hopeful energy and a powerful sense that real and positive change is not only possible, but imminent.

I'm doing my best to hold onto those feelings and maybe put a little of that goodness back into the world...

SO... in the realm of LIVE performance (well, live on the internet, at least), I'm excited to have these two shows on my September calendar:

First, on Tuesday, September 1st, 7-8PM Eastern, I'll be playing a full set for The Folk Project Acoustic Stayaway series. The Folk Project is near and dear to my heart, and I have played under their banner many times and in many configurations over the years. I am so pleased that this beautiful community has found a way to continue presenting live music in this time of social distancing. This concert will stream live on my FACEBOOK page.

Then, on Sunday, September 6th, 7-10PM Eastern, I'll be playing a 15-minute set as part of the The Greenwich Village Folk Festival 2020, streaming live both on Facebook and YouTube. These shows have been happening every first Sunday of the month this summer featuring a stellar array of performers. I've enjoyed watching the July and August editions, and am honored to be participate in the September show!

I hope to do more online performances in the coming months, perhaps in the form of late-night sets for insomniacs like me -- Midnight Musings or some such thing -- live from my FACEBOOK page. Can I get an "amen?" Follow the page to stay informed about when that might happen...

In the realm of SEMI-LIVE performance, I'm happy to say there are now SEVEN live-from-my-apartment videos in the QUARANTINE SONGS playlist on my YouTube channel. I hope to be adding more soon. If you SUBSCRIBE to my channel, you can be among the first to know when that happens. Subscribing is absolutely FREE and it's an excellent way to support your independent musician friends during this time without live and in-person performances.

In the realm of songs-writtten-for-and-about-songwriting-contests, I'm tickled to tell you my little song "Smith-Corona" took second place in the Just This Guy Songwriting Contest sponsored by the superfabulous Paul Loyd (he's just this guy). Hear it, and the other winning songs, HERE.

And finally, in the realm of albums-yet-to-be-released, I am relieved to report that I have FINALLY returned to the album project I began before the pandemic sent me into creative shutdown. Working alone in my home studio, I've managed to record eight songs thus far, to various stages of completion. I hope to record a dozen or more before choosing which to include on the album and sending them off to pro engineers for mixing and mastering. Stay tuned for more on that front...

As always, my sincerest thanks for listening during this time of intense weirdness. I'm holding onto the hope that music is still a source of connection and community in this world, and that people will continue to need what we songwriters have to offer. Stay safe, and stay in touch...

Much love,

It is my sincerest hope that this note finds you and your loved ones safe and well.

The world is turning at a dizzying pace, it seems. Terrible things are happening. But good things are happening, too. Here in Brooklyn, it is quieter than ever. Life is slower. I spend more time with the people I love best. We get up early. We eat together. We play together. We talk. We sing. We get silly. We don't rush anything. Some days, I struggle, but overall, I am grateful. Deeply grateful.

Everything around us has changed and keeps changing on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. It's hard to plan beyond the immediate present, but I figure while I strive to remain present in the immediate, I may as well make music.

Here are a few of the projects keeping my musical self intact at present:

The Chicks With Dip sisterhood of songwriters has been a source of support, friendship, and inspiration for me for nearly two decades.

My friend and frequent touring partner Joe Iadanza has been doing a deep dive into the music of Bruce Springsteen with his 40 Days of Bruce project on YouTube. I'm pleased to be part of a collaborative video premiering tomorrow. Check out ALL the videos here:
JOE IADANZA: 40 DAYS OF BRUCE

And finally, an EXCLUSIVE for just you fine folks... back in my Fordham University days, I was an active member of the Mimes & Mummers theatre club. Our alumni association recently asked us to re-create a favorite song or monologue from back in those days, so I chose a song I first sang as "Sheila" in our 1989 production of Hair. Here's a secret link to my performance of the song live from my home studio:
EASY TO BE HARD

Thanks for sticking with me and the music through all this. I hope we'll meet again in person before too long, but until we do, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay present. You are not alone.

Wow. Since last I wrote you, so much has changed.

I played two wonderful shows the first weekend in March for gracious, beautiful music lovers, and somehow managed not to touch not a single one of them. We were a jittery bunch of humans for sure, but the music seemed a sweet balm for performers and audience alike.

Just a few days later, though, things began to get serious. New York City schools closed. I cancelled nine shows. Grocery shopping became an anxious adventure. My beloved yoga studio closed its doors. People I love became ill. People I don't know, but who were loved by others, died.

Things are scary for everyone right now, I know. I feel helpless staying at home, but I know that's the best course of action.

But good things are happening here. I bake bread. I practice yoga. I play games and watch movies with my family. I have long, rambling phone conversations with loved ones. And perhaps best of all, I continue to use my home recording equipment. Here are a few of the projects I've been working on:

My friend Neale Eckstein put together a virtual jam session with a zillion fabulous folkies (including my sweet husband) that I'm thrilled to be part of:
THE WEIGHT (QUARANTINE EDITION)

I made a new YouTube playlist of songs I've been recording in different rooms of my house and sharing on Facebook just to keep my spirits up:
QUARANTINE SONGS

Tomorrow -- Friday, April 10 -- I'll be featured on Ron Olesko's Folk Music Notebook as part of the "Shelter in Place" series. Catch me doing a 15-minute set from my home studio at 12 noon, 4PM, 1AM, and 3AM here:
FOLK MUSIC NOTEBOOK

It is my sincerest wish that you and all those you love remain safe and healthy. Please take good care of yourselves -- body, mind, and spirit -- and make sure plenty of good music is a part of your plan for that. I am confident that we will meet again on the other side of all this. Until then, may you know

Peace,

The world seems a little upside-down to me right now, but if there's one thing I'm certain of, it's that I will persist.

I will persist in making songs because it is how I make sense of the world around me. I will persist in singing songs because it is how I communicate. I will persist in recording songs because they are what I will leave behind when my body leaves this upside-down world.

Whatever you love, whatever you believe in, persist in that and you will prevail. Fight only righteous fights. Leave the world around you a little bit more beautiful than you found it.

It's been a minute... I've been laying pretty low for the past few months, getting cozy with my family and my cat, renovating our kitchen, and best of all, working on demo recordings of new songs in preparation for a NEW ALBUM in 2020!

What's more, I'm thrilled to tell you that the producer of said new album is a songwriter I love and respect, who has supported my career in every way since the very beginning. Though she can be a bit scattered and under-confident at times, she has impeccable taste and high artistic standards. She is never satisfied with a mediocre song or a lackluster performance, but knows when it's time to step away from the microphone and take a walk. Who is this mystery woman?

Me.

You read that right. It's me. After a few deep conversations with trusted friends and allies in the music community, plus some helpful feedback on early tracks, I've decided to place my new album in my own capable, albeit shaky, hands. I plan to record as much as I can at home, playing the instruments I know how to play, then hiring other players for parts best served by their particular talents. When all tracks are ready for their close-up, I will bring in pro engineers to mix and master the record. I am, to quote the great Stephen Sondheim, "excited AND scared," but somehow still at peace with this decision. It's surely new and uncharted territory for me.

Follow the album's progress on FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM if you like. I'll surely be sharing lots of little tidbits along the way!

Of course, there are also plenty of live shows coming up in the next few weeks. Join me at one -- or more -- of these performances if you're in the neighborhood:

Thursday, February 13, my co-curator Devlin Miles and I will host the final edition of LIVE FROM THE VAULT: SONGWRITER SESSIONS as we welcome stellar guests INA MAY WOOL and ABBIE GARDNER to Brooklyn. Yesterday, Autumn became Winter in just a matter of hours! No matter, though. I've got tea, sweaters, books, a cat, and best of all, MUSIC!

Not a whole lot of live shows between now and year's end, but I did want to let you all know about a few things...

I've spiffed up my website a bit, mostly because I just like tinkering with things. First of all, I've adding a site-wide music player at the bottom of each page that plays a career-spanning selection of tunes as you surf about on the site. And don't worry, it doesn't play automatically -- you get to decide to turn the music on or off. Also, dig the new, less-cluttered HOME page. Nifty, right?

I've also added a brand-new page -- SERVICES -- that details the music-related stuff I do outside of concerts. Click the link and take a look if you're in the market for some harmony vocals on your next recording project, a songwriting workshop facilitator, or a songwriting/performance coach to coax out your best creative self.

The VIDEO page has a few new additions, as well, including a long-forgotten full-band version of "Put Down the Gun" from the 2013 CD release party for Steel & Salt. Good stuff. Videophile friends, if you've got any good CS vids in your vault, I'd sure love to see them. If my performance was any good, I can get 'em all spiffed up for YouTube in no time with your name attached...

As for live shows, there's one special one JOE IADANZA and I have been looking forward to for quite some time -- Saturday, December 7 at Deer Creek Coffeehouse in Darlington, MD. We'd sure love to see you if you're in the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, my co-curator Devlin Miles and I are still hosting LIVE FROM THE VAULT: SONGWRITER SESSIONS every second Thursday in Brooklyn.
Whatever holidays you celebrate this season, I do hope you're finding ways to stay warm and connected with those you love -- and yourself. These are trying times, for sure, friends. Hold on to what is true. Wishing you warm beverages, tight hugs, hot music, and

It's always my intention to write an upbeat, sunny message about upcoming shows and new projects and a bunch of nifty stuff coming down the pike that I'm excited about... but I'll tell you the truth. As much as I'd love to do that, I don't have much in the proverbial gas tank at the moment.

Sure, things are going well. I had a wonderful summer playing a few great festivals (this photo with ASL interpreter Jody Prysock is my favorite from Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, captured by Jake Jacobson), spending time with people I love, soaking up some sun and lots and lots of amazing, heart-stirring music. I have a bunch of shows I'm excited about in September and October -- benefits for causes I believe in, co-bills with my fabulous friend Karyn Oliver, in-the-round shows at the songwriter series I'm co-curating right here in Brooklyn, and my very first online show at StageIt.com. I'm writing and polishing new songs -- a whole bunch, in fact -- and making plans about how to put together a new album in 2020.

And still, there are days -- sometimes even weeks or months -- when no matter how together I look on the outside, inside, I'm in a million pieces I have no clue how to put back together. It's hard to get anything meaningful to happen on those days. Hell, it's hard to get anything at all to happen on those days. But I try. I get out of bed and I wave goodbye to my family as they go off to storm the castles of work and school. I practice yoga. I drink coffee. I write. I book shows. I promote shows. I do the chores and the shopping. I cook. And always, I kiss and hug and otherwise give plenty of attention to my beloved castle-stormers, trying to remain present to them.

And despite all that, today is one of those days. And so was yesterday. And maybe tomorrow, too. So instead of just pushing aside this feeling, today, I'm going to sit with it and be present to myself in all my unvarnished frailty. And although I should probably wait even longer to write to you all, it feels like a really authentic thing to do to let you in on how things are right now, at this moment.

Maybe it's because I want you to know that if any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone. I live a life I love, surrounded by people I love and who love me back in spades, and yet I struggle. Maybe you struggle, too. If so, I see you. Maybe we can sit and just BE together for awhile. Maybe we can be kind to ourselves while we're at it. Put on your own oxygen masks first, friends, so we can be more fully present to each other. Hope to see you soon...

Namaste,
Carolann

July brings me to the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, OK. I was privileged to play this fest back in 2010 during the waning days of my tenure with Red Molly, and it was absolutely earthshaking. My experience there among musical kindred, surrounded by the very palpable aura of the godfather of American troubadours, launched me into the next phase of my career, affirming my desire to continue making music and finding truth in songwriting even after my departure from the band. I am honored and delighted to return to this wonderful festival under my own banner, and looking forward to making new memories and new friends!

August brings me to my spiritual home, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in Hillsdale, NY. This year, I get to play the main stage in the Most Wanted Song Swap, alongside fellow 2018 Emerging Artist winners Quarter Horse and Justin Farren. Though I have lost count of the number of times I've played on those stages, climbed that glorious hill, swapped songs at those campsites, and slept in a tent under that expansive, starry sky, every year's experience is somehow uniquely magical. Sacred ground, indeed...

And other stuff happens this Summer, too, kicking off this weekend with a couple of great road shows with Cosby Gibson in Gloversville NY and my old friends The Boxcar Lilies in Northampton MA -- plus one from the comfort of my very own home (and yours):

I find myself wanting things I do not, cannot, or should not have, spending money unwisely (well, even more unwisely than usual), and generally having trouble keeping mind and body still and focused for any length of time. I crave new projects, new songs, new adventures, new clothes... which is fine, I suppose, but the delicate balance of my life seems just a little bit off these days. I'm not sure why this is happening, or exactly what to do about it, but I'm trying to channel all this restless energy into positive action while I figure it out. Presently devoting myself to creating and polishing new songs, mentally planning the next album project, looking for performance opportunities a little farther from home, and of course, holding tight to the yoga and meditation practice that's been bringing my mind and body into closer communication for nearly five years now...

CarolannSolebello.com
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/57025942019-04-01T14:09:25-04:002019-04-01T14:09:25-04:00Receive
Last week, I had an unexpectedly revealing conversation with a friend about the giving and receiving of energy; the seizure and release of control. As productive, outcome-oriented humans, we spend a great deal of energy trying to control things in our lives. We exert Herculean (or perhaps Sisyphean) effort herding tasks and people and events in the direction we want them to go, controlling environments and messages and images, squeezing our expectations into manageable corrals where even the outcome is something we try to wrestle into submission.

But what would happen if we let go? What would happen if, instead of tightening our grip and directing energy toward controlling outcomes, we released, allowing ourselves to receive energy? What would happen if we opened hands and heart and mind to energy flowing toward us, rather than constantly firing out bursts of energy in all directions in a futile attempt to control outcomes?

"Receive? It has always been difficult for me to receive," I said to my friend. And we both wondered why.

So this is now my challenge. Let go. Open. Receive.

Fortunately for me, the month of April is brimming with opportunities to do just that:

April brings a songwriters-in-the-round show at The Living Room at 35 East that I've been looking forward to for quite some time, plus the inaugural episode of a brand-new in-the-round series I'm curating with DEVLIN MILES called Live From The Vault: Songwriter Sessions. My hands in constant motion, my brain whirling, my eyes not sure what to focus on as the many balls I'm trying to keep in the air blur into one... booking new shows, promoting shows already booked, learning new music, singing backup for friends' new records, playing sidekick bass, starting a new songwriter series (more on that soon) and maybe, just maybe, recording demos of new songs of my own...

And perhaps most importantly, this month and next bring more than a few concert appearances, most notably three with my friend and co-conspirator JOE IADANZA. We'll be taking a run to New England together March 22-24, stopping in MA, VT, and CT. If you haven't seen Joe and I together, well, it's really pretty special. Here's a little taste:

But I'm not complaining. Here in NYC, it's just kind of a normal cold, not crazy cold, and certainly not Polar Vortex cold like it is in some parts of the USA and Canada right now. If you're caught up in that, I hope you're staying safe indoors as much as possible, and covering every part of your body when outdoors. Put a couple blankets in the car, too. You just never know when you might need some extra protection. Frostbite is no joke, friends...

As for me, well, I've been spending these chilly days making soup, wearing sweaters, writing songs, and hey -- sometimes even performing them in PUBLIC!

Especially excited for a handful of shows with my friend and collaborator JOE IADANZA coming up FAST -- this Friday at my old favorite haunt The Turning Point and next month in MA, VT, and CT.
I can still say that, right? Even though the first month of 2019 is nearly half over? I sure hope so, because I'm just catching up and preparing for all sorts of new adventures this year!

Hope you're safe and warm and keeping loved ones close in these chilly and confusing times. I'm holding tight to my family and the music, cooking good food, practicing yoga, and writing new songs. Turning inward to gather energy to turn outward and do things like attend the Women's March next weekend...

Wasn't it just August last week? Autumn seemed more fleeting than a murmuration of migratory birds this year, and I'm surprised to find myself turning more and more inward with each passing day, craving good books, hot soup, wool socks, and homemade bread...

I wrote this a few years ago as part of the RealWomenRealSongs project and shelved it until the right moment revealed itself with this project. Also proud to say that the marvelous Maria Di Meglio of Harpeth Rising was able to join me on cello for the recording of this song. Listen in here:

https://youtu.be/5aDzuKexmHQ

I'm just tickled to have this song nestled in among tunes by some of my favorite folks -- Tret Fure, Katherine Rodeau, Friction Farm, Laura Zucker, Martin Swinger, Phil Henry, and many others -- and thrilled at the prospect of a little seasonal airplay on folk radio! If you're not lucky enough to be one of the deejays on the distribution list, you can listen to the Hudson Harding playlist here:

Join me at one (or more) of these shows if you can... I'm always glad to see you!

Before I sign off, though, I'd love to share one of my favorite September moments with you... a few weeks ago, I was privileged to visit with Traditions host Ron Olesko at WFDU-FM in Teaneck, NJ, and lucky enough to have my friend and producer Joe Iadanza along for the ride! Joe and I performed a few songs live and talked in-depth with Ron about the making of SHIVER. Through the magic of the web, you can listen in on our conversation and live performance here:

Outside of Brooklyn, Falcon Ridge is the place I feel most at home. Seriously. And this weekend, I'll get to play my songs in a number places there:

The Lounge Stage, Thursday 7:55PM, in-the-round with Steve Mayone and Cassandra House;

I'm on second, after the amazing Emerald Rae!

It's gonna be amazing, and I can't wait!

And then, in just a few short weeks, l'll be spending Labor Day weekend with my wonderful NO FUSS AND FEATHERS bandmates, playing shows at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, The Minstrel in Morristown NJ, and Jamey's House of Music in Lansdowne PA! It's festival season! That means it's HOT HOT HOT for me, and not just in the literal sense...

Festival-goers in the Northeast can find me at two festivals in July, one in August, and one in September:

July 13, I'll be playing the 9PM slot on the River Stage at Black Potatoe Music Festival in Clinton, NJ.

August 2-5, I'll be at my very favorite festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, where it will be my great honor and delirious pleasure to play as one of 24 acts selected for the Emerging Artist Showcase on Friday afternoon. My former band, Red Molly, "emerged" at this showcase 12 years ago, and now I get to do it again as a solo artist. This one brings ALL the feels for me. I'll also be playing a few informal sets around the campgrounds all weekend. Stay tuned...

September 8, I'll be at the CT Folk Festival & Green Expo in New Haven, CT, performing as one of five writers selected for the Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition!

And as if that weren't enough excitement for one summer, l'll be spending Labor Day weekend with my wonderful NO FUSS AND FEATHERS bandmates, playing shows in NY, NJ, and PA!

As always, check the SHOWS page at CarolannSolebello.com for details on these and other shows.
for me, summertime means festival time! i've got a handful of dates on the calendar so far: on june 9, i get to play the season's best backyard party and mini-fest at MOORE MUSIC IN THE HOUSE in rockville, MD alongside the fabulous CRYS MATTHEWS and the harmonious THE BELLE HOLLOWS. on july 13, i'll be returning to BLACK POTATOE MUSIC FESTIVAL in clinton NJ, and on july 29, i have the pleasure of warming up the HUNTINGTON FOLK FESTIVAL stage in huntington NY with my good friends MILES & MAFALE just prior to the great TOM RUSH's headlining set. check the CALENDAR page for further dates...

it's a beautiful summer day here in brooklyn, and i mean that. as i type this, the temperature is 88 degrees fahrenheit, whereas just a few days ago, i was wearing a wool coat! you won't hear me complain, though. my heart and soul are dancing for joy in the light and warmth after the long, dark winter. i think spring may be arriving next week, but until then, happy summer, everyone!

in this merry month of may, i am delighted to report that SHIVER will begin hitting the airwaves! gigantic thanks to my friends at HUDSON HARDING MUSIC for helping me make this new record available to the wonderful community of radio hosts who wholeheartedly embrace and support independent artists like me. i remain grateful to have come to know many of them personally during the course of my career, and remain an enthusiastic listener and supporter. like elvis costello said, "radio is the sound salvation!"

Be that as it may, no matter what the weatherfolk say, I'm calling it Spring because it's April and April means I'm back out on the road again in earnest, playing SEVEN shows in the Northeast this month -- two with NO FUSS AND FEATHERS and five solo -- and I am really, really excited about it!

I'll be playing lots of songs from my brand-new record, SHIVER, and will surely have plenty of copies on hand at every single show. Click HERE to find details on where and when I'll be in your neighborhood, and click HERE if you'd like to order a copy of SHIVER mailed directly to your door!

Also happy to announce that I'll be partnering with HUDSON HARDING MUSIC to make SHIVER available to all your favorite folk radio hosts around the country by month's end!

Spring is surely a hopeful time for me. Hope it is for you, too, friends. Keep on singing, and hope to see you soon!

Peace,
Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/51053802018-03-01T09:50:02-05:002018-03-01T09:50:02-05:00march news
today is the first of march, and that means i am now the mother of a twelve-year-old. which is absolutely blowing my mind. the soulful-eyed little bundle who arrived on a frigid afternoon back in 2006 is now a dancing, singing, songwriting, video game-playing, book-loving sixth-grade math whiz who showers me with love and amazes me every single day. all of you more experienced parents who told me -- back when he was a squiggling infant and i was a sleep-deprived, guitar-playing hot mess -- that time would fly and he'd be grown in the blink of an eye, well, you were right. wow. and thank you. ;-)

and as if all that squishy mom joy weren't enough, i have even more good news today... i'm happy to report that the new album, SHIVER, previously available only at my website and at live shows, is now available at the one and only online source for indie music of all genres, CD BABY! Here's the direct link, in case you'd like to do a little shopping:

https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/carolannsolebello3

but even if you already own a copy of SHIVER, i encourage you to surf on over to CD BABY anyway. not only can you preview and order music from all sorts of wonderful indie musicians, you can also try your hand at music blogging and leave an album review on any page you choose! i'd love it, of course, if SHIVER got a few reviews to decorate the page...

soon, SHIVER will be available at iTunes and other fine online purveyors of digital music. i'll be sure to let you know when that happens!

and meanwhile, there are also live shows in march! two really good ones, as a matter of fact: on saturday, march 10, i'll be playing two full sets at EMMAUS ROAD CAFE in lancaster PA; and on thursday, march 22, i'll be swapping songs (and undoubtedly a few laughs) with powerhouse songwriters and dear friends ABBIE GARDNER and INA MAY WOOL at THE BEAN RUNNER in peekskill NY!

i begin this month with deepest appreciation for my little family, for dear friends near and far, and for music lovers like you who have supported my songwriting endeavors lo, these many years. thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the joy you bring to my life!

may the winds of march soon become gentle springtime breezes, and may you be enfolded in love, good music, and

carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/49606462017-12-03T17:50:14-05:002021-02-18T05:20:00-05:00christmas presence
ladies and gentlemen, the band -- CRAIG AKIN (upright bass), JAGODA (drums, percussion), ERIC LEE (mandolin, fiddle), PAUL SILVERMAN (accordion), JOE IADANZA (acoustic guitar), and CATHERINE MILES (harmony vocals) -- has left the building. thankyouverymuch...

four tracking sessions and one edit session later, the new album is in the can. well, actually the hard drive. and the cloud. but you know what i mean, right?

on the first of december, fearless producer JOE IADANZA, superhero recording engineer MARK DANN and this humble songwriter handed off twelve finished tracks to master mixologist BEN WISCH for the making of magic. when ben completes his mysterious and beautiful part in this project in ten days or so, we'll find the right sequence for these songs and master the whole kit and caboodle back at mark dann's studio.

i can hardly believe we've arrived at this place. i'm not sure i've ever tracked an entire album so quickly or so smoothly before, and i'm not sure i've ever sung quite so honestly in a recording studio before. though we spent lots of time and energy planning the arrangements and the sessions, i remain astounded that everything came together in so few studio hours, and in such a wonderful way... but i suppose that's what happens when you hire exactly the right people for the work at hand, starting with an organized, talented, and patient producer like JOE IADANZA. i am exceedingly grateful that each of these absurdly talented folks found the time and inclination to share their bounteous gifts with me and my songs. i could not have asked for a better group of people to make this happen. thank you, dream team.

though the runway was long, bumpy, and exhausting, the flight itself was short, intense, and exhilarating! now, i'll need to muster the patience to stay calm through the descent and landing...

and oh, goodness. how could i forget? the REALLY big news is that we have, at long last, decided on a title for this midlife magnum opus: SHIVER.

though it took quite some time to arrive, the title seemed self-evident once it appeared. i have written dozens and dozens of songs in my career, but i have never once used the word "shiver" in a song. until now. this album contains no less than FOUR songs using this word, each in a different emotional context. crazy, right? and self-evident.

the photograph above was shot in the studio by the exceptional BRI DOUGHERTY. it is not the cover. yet... i must keep some things mysterious, right?

i am excited. and relieved. and anxious. and giddy. and eager. and, by the way, still accepting pre-orders at this link:

https://www.CarolannSolebello.com/store

though i'm disappointed printed copies won't be ready in time for christmas, who knows? perhaps santa solebello will leave a little digital download in your virtual stocking before the big day...

and i also get to occupy myself with a few concerts this festive season. i am proud to be part of COMING TOGETHER IN CONCERT FOR PUERTO RICO on december 16 in paramus NJ, and FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY OF HUNTINGTON'S HARD LUCK CAFE on december 21 in huntington NY. click HERE for details on these and all other upcoming shows.

Days, that is...

On Monday, November 6, I will tune my guitar, put on my favorite studio headphones, and play my Martin-picking heart out when engineer Mark Dann hits the RECORD button and Jagoda, king of drummers, drops the downbeat and lays down the groove with Craig Akin, the bass fiddler every songwriter dreams of. If all goes as planned, we'll cut live rhythm tracks for six tunes that day, then bring Paul Silverman and Eric Lee into the studio on Tuesday to add some sweet accordion, fiddle, and mandolin lines to those songs and a few others. The following week, producer Joe Iadanza will join me on a few two-guitar tunes and Catherine Miles will sprinkle her harmonic magic around like fairy dust. Rehearsals have been deliciously fun and productive, and I can't wait to get started! I may not sleep a wink until Monday...

We plan to get all twelve songs in the can before the Tofurkey goes in the oven, then mix and master as soon as we are able. Right now, I am confident the whole dozen will make the final cut, but really, only time will tell.

And no, I'm not really going to call the record [ALBUM TITLE]. I am hoping the perfect title for this magnum-opus-in-waiting reveals itself soon. Meanwhile, the pile of rejects grows higher and higher...

While I'm not exactly thrilled about that, I am absolutely tickled that the list of folks who will receive the new record in their mailboxes (and inboxes) the very moment it's finished (way before the official radio/press release in February) also continues to grow. If you want to get on that list, it's oh, so easy to do. Just click this link to pre-order: https://carolannsolebello.com/store

I have musicians and engineers and photographers and designers and manufacturers and promoters to pay, so every little bit helps.

And as if I didn't have enough to be excited about this month, I also have a handful of live performances I am really looking forward to. Tuesday, November 14, I'll be on the bill at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn with my friend (and former bandie) Abbie Gardner as she settles into her November residency at this storied Williamsburg bar's backroom listening space. Then the following weekend, November 17-19, I'll be back on the bus for a short tour with No Fuss and Feathers. We'll be hitting Port Jefferson NY, Harvard MA, and Brooklyn NY. Details for these and other upcoming concerts can be found on the SHOWS page at CarolannSolebello.com.

Oh, and in the middle of all that, there's also the gathering of the tribe at NERFA, the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference, in Stamford CT next weekend. Holy wow. I'd better quit typing and change my guitar strings. See you soon, friends!

In love and gratitude,

I am BEYOND thrilled to announce that Producer Joe and I have taken the next step toward making [ALBUM TITLE] a reality. We have booked recording sessions for our dream team of players to put it all together in the studio! In early November, we will don our headphones and hit the red button with none other than Craig Akin (upright bass), Jagoda (drums and percussion), Paul Silverman (accordion), Eric Lee (mandolin and fiddle), and Catherine Miles (harmony vocals), in the same room, at the same time. I can barely contain my excitement! Of course, there are still a few arrangement tweaks to make, and a few pre-production rehearsals to schedule, but nevertheless, PROGRESS!

Twelve songs. Six musicians. One songwriter. Infinite joy...

Perhaps, next month, we will have actually settled on a title for this opus! Until then, you can still get on my ever-growing list of folks who will receive [ALBUM TITLE] in their mailboxes (and inboxes) the very moment it is complete, even before the radio folks or the venue folks, or the press folks get their hands on it. It's oh, so easy to reserve your copy, and I would be oh, so grateful for a little advance funding to pay for all that studio time and all those musicians. Here's the link to pre-order [ALBUM TITLE]: https://carolannsolebello.com/store

Of course, there are also shows to do this month, about which I am also excited... Click on the pic for details on those.

Not BREAKING news. And certainly not FAKE news. The news I have to share is unequivocally GOOD, deeply SIGNIFICANT, and undeniably REAL, especially to me.

I am so very happy to tell you that my (supremely talented, methodical, patient, and organized) producer JOE IADANZA and I have, at long last, decided upon a list of twelve songs to record for the upcoming album! Since we started with a list of thirty possibilities, choosing this delightful dozen is a giant leap on our journey to the studio!

Joe and I are confident that each of these songs is now technically and emotionally ready to put on party clothes and dance with some of our favorite musicians -- Craig Akin (upright bass) Jagoda (drums and percussion), Paul Silverman (accordion), and Eric Lee (mandolin and fiddle). We know these fine gents will help us dress each tune in its very best, and look forward to working with them in the studio next month!

Will I tell you what songs we've chosen? Nope. Gotta maintain my reputation as a woman of mystery...

Will I tell you what we're calling the album? Nope. But I promise you'll be the first to know as soon as it has a name. And if you want to be among the first to own this mysterious and (currently) nameless new album, you can pre-order by clicking HERE.

ENORMOUS thanks to all those who have pre-ordered so far! Your support helps me pay musicians and engineers and producers and photographers and graphic artists and manufacturers and radio promoters...

If you haven't pre-ordered yet, there's still plenty of time to get on board! Click HERE, then tell two friends to do the same! And tell them to tell two friends, and so on, and so on… you see what I’m getting at here? Once again, here's that pre-order link: http://www.carolannsolebello.com/store

This weekend, I head for the hills of upstate NY with NO FUSS AND FEATHERS, then spend the rest of the month as a solo troubadour. Hope you'll be able to join me for a show sometime soon as I give a few of the new tunes a spin in front of live audiences. Click HERE to find out where you can find me playing and singing this month and beyond.

Here's to more news that is good, significant, and real...

Peace,

Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/48001952017-08-02T13:42:34-04:002022-06-01T05:18:02-04:00Baying at the Moon
Hi Friends!

Patience. Patience is where it's at for me this August.

I am a notoriously impatient human, so the whole album-making process can be very challenging for me on that front. Though I've been down this road many times before, I still find myself wishing I could rush into the studio, record in the moment, mix, master, and release a new record as fast as humanly possible... but alas, that is not the way of things when you want your work to be the best it can be.

So, this month, as my intrepid (and supremely patient) producer JOE IADANZA and I continue to methodically work through each of the twenty songs under consideration for the album, carefully listening to what each needs to be its very best -- a lyric change there, a harmonic tweak there, perhaps the replacement or removal of entire sections to clarify story, intent, emotion -- I continually remind myself that good things take time. And great reserves of patience! In September, Joe and I will ask a few of our favorite musicians to join us for rehearsals and help us find the best sounds for each of these songs. Then, and only then, will we schedule recording dates.

Deep in my heart, I know the fruit of all this patience will be the very BEST album of my career thus far! If you are blessed with more patience than I possess, perhaps you'd like to get on board early and pre-order the oh-so-creatively titled [ALBUM TITLE] by clicking HERE.

Get in on the ground floor today, friends, and while you’re at it, tell two friends to do the same! And tell them to tell two friends, and so on, and so on… you see what I’m getting at here? Once again, here's that pre-order link:

Pre-production is humming along nicely, as my excellent producer and friend JOE IADANZA and I distill each of twenty songs down to its essence, exposing the emotional truth between the lines. Soon, we will choose the best fifteen or so to record with a few of the finest musicians we know. Although I'm not yet certain which tunes will make the final cut of ten or twelve, I do know that they will be some of the very best songs I’ve ever written. I can't wait for you to hear them fleshed out and beautifully recorded into a thoroughly satisfying collection that bears repeated listening.

I am also thrilled to announce that my excellent friend, fleet-fingered guitarist, and expert producer JOE IADANZA is on board to help me carefully choose and lovingly craft arrangements for [NUMBER BETWEEN 10 AND 12] of the very best songs I’ve ever written.

We’ve lined up a stellar cast of players, including [FANTASTIC BASS PLAYER], [AMAZING FIDDLER], [STELLAR MANDOLIN PLAYER], and [ROCK-SOLID PERCUSSIONIST] for recording sessions [DATE BETWEEN TODAY AND LABOR DAY] at [SUPERGROOVY NYC STUDIO] and are truly excited about the sweet sounds these fine musicians will help us create!

[ALBUM TITLE] will surely be the finest album I’ve ever released, and may quite possibly be the best album since [YOUR VERY FAVORITE ALBUM EVER]!

Seriously, though, I’ve got a ridiculous backlog of songs that are just aching to be heard, and am so happy Joe has agreed to wear his producer hat on this project, guiding them into the world clothed in their very best.

Most of these tunes were vetted in their infancy by my esteemed colleagues and fellow workers-in-song at the deliciously-infamous Jack Hardy Songwriters Exchange. If you know anything about our group, then you know it’s not a gathering for the faint of heart. In the spirit of our late founder, we meet weekly to share newly-drafted songs and challenge each other to be the best writers we can be, sweating the details in scathing philosophical discourse and the occasional death-defying duel with swords of dry fettuccini. If a song survives that, well, it’s got to be good, right?

Though I’m not yet certain which tunes will make the final cut, I am confident that [ALBUM TITLE] will be a finely-wrought collection of songs shot through with common threads and woven together in a feng shui kind of way. I won’t be singing in Mandarin, of course, but since both Joe and I remain devoted to the classic album format, our goal is to create a harmonious thematic and musical whole. I am certain that [ALBUM TITLE] will be a thoroughly satisfying listening experience from top to bottom.

Want to get your hands on [ALBUM TITLE] before anyone else does? A prepayment of $25 ensures that your signed copy – plus a spiffy hi-fidelity digital download – will be delivered to your mailbox and your inbox, respectively, just as soon as it’s ready.
Catch you on the flip side, friends. Sincerest thanks for your generosity and your continued faith in my musical explorations!

The first month of 2017 was by turns exciting, exhausting, and exhilarating for me. So many incredible experiences were packed into just a few short weeks, so I'm taking a moment to breathe, reflect, and prepare for the next part of the musical journey.

What happened? I'm glad you asked...

NO FUSS AND FEATHERS played concerts in Virginia and Texas, and put on our activist hats for two monumental events in our nation's capital: We played a few songs for the pre-show crowd at the UnNaugural Concert (a fundraiser for progressive national advocacy groups), then gathered in peaceful demonstration with hundreds of thousands of kindred the next day at the Women's March on Washington. It was a weekend that reaffirmed my faith in the kindness and strength of my fellow Americans, and an experience I will surely remember for the rest of my life.

Certainly just as exciting was sharing the stage once again with my old friend and former Red Molly bandmate Abbie Gardner. We swapped new songs, sang a little harmony, and let out more than a few hearty laughs with a warmly appreciative audience at the cozy and comfortable Jalopy Theatre and School of Music in Brooklyn. Click HERE to see a few photos of this beautiful evening.

Finally, I was honored to accept the Director's Choice Award at the 33rd Annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest Gala for my song "Matches," which also received Silver honors in the Folk/Acoustic category. The field of songwriters represented was deep and rich, so I was simultaneously humbled to be in such company and ecstatic at the opportunity to perform a song that is so meaningful to me for such a fantastic audience. Click HERE to hear "Matches," which will be available on a forthcoming compilation CD.

And what's next? Again, I'm glad you asked. Click HERE to see a full list of upcoming shows!

Thank you, as always, for continuing the journey with me. Until we meet again, I wish you love, laughter, good music, and

Peace,
Carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/45343892017-01-02T18:16:14-05:002021-04-21T13:13:55-04:00connection and healing
happy new year, friends!

here's hoping you are facing 2017 with renewed optimism and purpose, and with faith in yourself and in those you love. i know i am. after nesting with my little family these last few weeks, i feel recharged and ready to go out into the world and do what i love the most. while the world churns, as it always has and always will, i will sing and play with all my heart in the hope of sparking a little human connection and healing with each song.

i'd like to share a piece of really good news. my song, "matches," has been awarded silver in the folk/acoustic category in the 33rd ANNUAL MID-ATLANTIC SONG CONTEST. i honestly couldn't be more pleased to be included on a list of winners with so many songwriters i admire, a bunch of whom i am lucky enough to call "friend." it will be my honor and my pleasure to perform "matches" at the gala awards ceremony later this month.

so onward into the breach i go, armed only with voice and guitar (and sometimes bass, of course). won't you join me along the road somewhere? if we all sing together, we can surely bring connection and healing to this churning world, one song at a time...

wishing you love, light, and

peace,
carolann
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/44772132016-11-27T00:00:00-05:002016-11-27T00:03:45-05:00What would Woody do?
i have been feeling sad and confused lately, worried about what the future holds for our beloved, deeply divided, nation. it seems we can't agree on much these days, and our angry, foggy brains seem incapable of thinking deeply about the proverbial big picture. we disagree and we lash out. we feel afraid and we look for someone to blame. we long for connection and we find isolation instead.

i think some of us who make songs for a living are having an especially hard time moving forward. how do we respond in times of turbulence? what can we say that will be meaningful? should we strive for social relevance, or simply duck our heads and avoid saying anything meaningful at all?

woody guthrie, the godfather of american folksingers, said that the job of a folksinger was to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. that's a pretty lofty job description, but together with my brothers and sisters in song, i promise to continue to reach for that ideal in the weeks and months to come. perhaps it will be only my own disturbed soul that is comforted and my own comfortable presumptions that are disturbed, but i will reach nonetheless.

i will reach out. i will listen. i will seek the good in everyone i meet. i will comfort, and yes, i will disturb. but above all, i will sing. i will sing with those who wish to sing. i will sing for those who cannot sing.

if we sing together, i know we can be louder than the hurt and the anger and the fear and the uncertainty.
Carolann Solebellotag:carolannsolebello.com,2005:Post/44429372016-10-29T00:22:38-04:002016-10-29T00:22:38-04:00Hello, world......and welcome to my newly-revamped website! We all need a little spruce-up every now and then, I suppose -- a new haircut, a massage, a new pair of shoes -- so I figured it was high time I shined up all things musical for presentation here on the magical interwebs. I'll be updating this page whenever I have some news to share, a thought I simply must express, or some new shows on the calendar. Browse around, stream some tunes, maybe pick up a CD or two, and drop me a note to say you've been here. I look forward to hearing from you!
xo
csCarolann Solebello
